Radiation and Optics Laboratory

Radiation and Optics Laboratory

Radiation and optics laboratory delivers research and development on physical level of telecommunication networks, that consist of optical fibre infrastructure and radiofrequency channel. The team in laboratory is responsible for optical and microwave communication equipment, 2D and 3D passive microwave structure modelling and simulation, development of antennas up to THz frequency region, and development of high-speed electronics. Most of research equipment was obtained through European projects within TEMPUS programme and at the later point from frame programmes of European Union as well as from domestic and foreign industrial projects. The laboratory has developed, delivered and tested microwave and fast electronic components for needs of the European projects ESTER, ATLAS and IPHOBAC. The head of laboratory prof. dr. Matjaž Vidmar has also been part of a team that designed and delivered artificial satellites Microsat and AMSAT P3D.

The Radiation and optics laboratory has top notch radiofrequency measuring equipment at its disposal, in order to measure antenna characteristics, radiofrequency spectrum, S-parameters as well as time-varying signals. The equipment assortment includes RF spectrum analyser up to 50 GHz, vector network analyser up to 67 GHz, scalable analyser of circuits up to 40 GHz and different RF sources up to 40 GHz. For direct time-domain measurements, oscilloscope up to 13 GHz is also available. To measure radiation characteristics of antennas, the laboratory has developed and implemented an open-air professional measuring spot with associated equipment on the roof of the Faculty of electrical engineering and anechoic-chamber-style measuring spot inside the laboratory. The equipment allows measuring of full antenna parameters, i.e. return loss, radiation patterns, gain, and polarisation.
The top notch measuring equipment is also available for optical system measurements, e.g., measurement of optical spectrum at telecommunication wavelengths and measurement of characteristics and phenomena on the optical fibre. The equipment includes Fabry-Perot optical spectrum analyser, adjustable optical attenuators, optical power meters, optical time- and frequency-domain reflectometers and different optical laser sources for 1,3 and 1,55 um. The communication equipment enables measurements in time domain with sample oscilloscope and measurements of bit error rates within a telecommunication link.

The laboratory is also involved into the student teaching process at Faculty of electrical engineering at University of Ljubljana and delivers different classes on all study-programme cycles of the Bologna Process in subjects that cover optical communications, radio communications, antennas and propagation, and basic microwave phenomena. Furthermore, it also supports a wide spectrum of interesting, dynamical and educational laboratory exercises and workshops.

In addition to European and governmental projects, the laboratory is also open to cooperate on industrial level in optical and radio communications area.
