Subject description

Prerequisits:

  • Enrollment in the study year.

Content (Syllabus outline):

Acoustic fundamentals, sound properties, human hearing, human speech, acoustic and electroacoustic measurements, anechoic chamber, analysis of acoustic signals, sound generation with musical instruments, electroacoustic transducers, digitalisation and sound recording, analogue-to-digital converters, noise reduction systems and dynamics, stereophonic reproduction, surround sound, digital-to-analogue converters, noise and vibrations, influence of noise on human beings, noise measurements, analogue and digital signal processing, distortion measurements of acoustic signals, blind source separation, lossless and lossy compression of audio recordings, MIDI protocol.

Objectives and competences:

The objective of this course is to acquaint students with acoustic fundamentals, acoustic measurements, noise measurements, human hearing and the entire chain from creation of the sound to the audio record.

Intended learning outcomes:

  • fundamentals of acoustics
  • implementation and interpretation of measurements of acoustic devices and systems
  • production and compression of audio recording
  • digital and analogue signal processing techniques
  • measurement of noise and influence of noise on human beings.

Learning and teaching methods:

  • Lectures, demonstrations and practical laboratory work.
