Subject description

Content (Syllabus outline):

  • Characteristics of mobile systems (assigned radio spectrum, cellular coverage, radio channel capacity, radio resources and mobility management).
  • Commercial mobile networks 2G, 3G and 4G (network architecture of GSM, UMTS and LTE for delivering the voice, data and messaging, advanced service architectures IMS/IN, security provisioning).
  • Wireless local area networks WiFi (architectures, connectivity, management, security).
  • Short range wireless communications (Bluetooth, ZigBee, RFID, NFC, proprietary).
  • Positioning topics (overview of satellite communication and navigation systems, positioning in mobile and wireless networks).
  • Telematics (telematics overview, planning service architectures, topics from traffic, Internet of Things, smart cities, smart grids, health systems).

Objectives and competences:

The elective course provides a systematic overview of mobile and telematic systems and services laying emphasis on understanding of characteristics, operation principles and development activities. The course is suitable for all interested students not regarding study field.

Learning and teaching methods:

  • Lectures and laboratory work with possible practical project work.
  • Written and oral exam in the form of extended discussion about the subject.
