Subject description

Prerequisits:

    Enrolment in the class. Acquaintance with content of following courses: Fundamentals of programming, Communication systems, Information systems

Content (Syllabus outline):

Definition of multimedia and properties of multimedia elements (text , image, animation , sound, video) . Properties of analogue and digital forms of multimedia elements, and the reasons for digitalization. Compression and most relevant multimedia formats. Architecture and features of multimedia systems such as IPTV , mobile TV and broadcasting ( DAB , DVB- x ) . Basic multimedia services ( IPTV services, mobile services , online service ) . Characteristics of terminal equipment used in multimedia systems ( TV, mobile terminal, PC , Tablet PC ) . The importance and characteristics of user interfaces (hardware user interfaces, software user interfaces) and interactivity. Multimedia content protection systems and their integration ( conditional access systems , DRM systems ) . Procedures for the production and processing of multimedia content. Platforms for development of multimedia services (software tools,programming interfaces ). Quality measurement in multimedia systems.

Objectives and competences:

The definition of multimedia concepts, basic multimedia elements and their properties. Explanation of the architecture(s) of modern broadcasting and multimedia systems, which serve as the basis for the implementation of multimedia services. Compression of multimedia elements. Understanding of the specifics of analogue and digital broadcasting. Understanding of production, preparation and processing procedures of multimedia materials. Knowledge of the IPTV and mobile TV systems. Knowledge of hardware equipment characteristics. Understanding of development and management approaches in multimedia platforms, systems and services. Measurements in multimedia systems.

Intended learning outcomes:

  • Knowledge and understanding of multimedia features and multimedia elements.
  • Understanding the technological basis of different multimedia systems architecture and consequent advantages and disadvantages.
  • Understanding and knowledge of the characteristics of multimedia services.
