Higher education teachers: Burnik Urban

Subject description

Prerequisits:

  • Knowledge covered by courses Radio Communications and Digital Communications.

Content (Syllabus outline):

Introduction to mobile communication systems (overview, concepts of wireless connectivity and mobility, a historical overview of commercial mobile systems, development guidelines). Electromagnetic wave propagation specific to mobile services (propagation modes, propagation under conditions specific to mobile services (N- LOS), fading, empirical propagation models, planning coverage). Cellular systems (network capacity, spectral reuse, call handover, interference in cellular systems, planning, methods to improve capacity and reduce interference). Digital mobile communications (digital data communication, modulation for mobile services, BER, channel coding). Channel access methods for shared medium resources (TDMA, FDMA, CDMA, SDMA, hybrid systems, network capacity and trunking). Architecture of wireless mobile systems and standardization (GSM, 3GPP, UMTS, WCDMA, LTE, LTE Advanced, development guidelines, WiFi, WiMAX, service carriers, signalling protocols, service architecture). Mobile services (voice, messaging, data communication, service convergence, All-IP networks, IMS).

Objectives and competences:

Understanding of operation and sensitivities of wireless mobile communication system components. Understanding of fundamental methods of mobile communication network planning. Getting acquantained with specifics of cellular communication systems. Knowledge of channel access methods for sharing media resources. Knowledge of public and proprietary wireless networks and standards. Knowledge of the mechanisms for provisioning of traditional and multimedia mobile services.

Intended learning outcomes:

Knowledge and understanding of the building blocks of mobile wireless telecommunications systems at all levels, from the source coding, channel coding, data transfer in non-ideal conditions, the capacity of the system to network design ad-hoc and public mobile communication systems.

Learning and teaching methods:

Lectures with DSP theory and practically oriented lab assignments encouraging teamwork.
