Subject description

Content (Syllabus outline):

  • Operational amplifier. Gain, common mode rejection ratio, saturation, internal structure. Inverting and noninverting amplifier, adder, voltage follower, transadmittance and transimpedance amplifier, current amplifier.
  • Nonideality of the DC characteristic. Input offset voltage. Input bias currents and input offset current. Compensation of input bias currents, offset voltage, and offset current. Temperature drift and aging. DC model circuit.
  • Frequency response of an operational amplifier. Stability, frequency compensation, slew rate, noise.
  • The role of operational amplifier in linear circuits. Difference amplifier, instrumentation amplifier, obtaining large gain with small resistors, transadmittance amplifier with grounded load, integrator, differentiator. Active filters with one and two poles, switched capacitor filters. Oscillators, Barkausen criterion, Wien oscillator, oscillation amplitude stabilization, phase shift oscillators, crystal oscillators, LC oscillators.
  • The role of operational amplifier in nonlinear circuits. Half wave and full wave rectifiers. Mean, peak, peak-to-peak, and RMS detectors. Obtaining nonlinear DC characteristics: piecewise-linear, quadratic, exponential, and logarithmic. Multiplier and divider. Clippers. Comparators. Schmitt triggers. Relaxation oscillators. Monostable multivibrator.

Objectives and competences:

Basic knowledge of the internal structure, the properties, and the use of an operational amplifier.

Intended learning outcomes:

The student will acquire the basic knowledge of operational amplifiers and their use in electronic circuits.
