Subject description

Prerequisits:

  • Matura,
  • computing.

Content (Syllabus outline):

  • Information society. Introduction to fundamental concepts of information-communication systems.
  • Users and information-communication service and content providers, and their application.
  • Fundamentals of communication systems. Digital data transmission. OSI and TCP/IP reference models, purpose of layered models and communication protocols. Architectures of telecommunication networks; access and core networks. Communication buses. Broadband concept, mobility, multimedia. Role of selected systems in communication services provisioning: Ethernet, TCP/IP, xDSL, wireless and mobile networks.
  • Fundamentals of Internet systems. Network layer, addressing, transport layer. IP networks, Internet applications. Fundamentals of Web and Web technologies.
  • Overview of information-communication service applications, World Wide Web. Fundamentals and basic features of convergent multimedia components and services.

Objectives and competences:

  • The course introduces fundamental knowledge about operation and application of communication systems. This knowledge is a necessity for all future technical engineers and comprises a part of general education of an engineer in the information society.
  • The topics build an integral whole, which is of interest and necessary for all students of electrical engineering. At the same time it facilitates involvement in telecommunications professional subjects in the continuation of the study, where some of the topics are covered in detail.

Intended learning outcomes:

Knowledge of basic concepts of information-communication systems, along with the fundamentals of their operation, usage and partially planning.
