The postgraduate studies programme and the programme of doctoral studies both have aim of developing independent researchers with a broad professional knowledge. In the master’s programme, the candidate as a rule complete the master study requirements within two years, and defend their Master’s thesis. In the doctoral programme, however, immediately after completing their master study requirements the students continue with working on the doctoral thesis, which is normally concluded within four years.

Postgraduate master studies were introduced at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in 1961, and were among the first at the University of Ljubljana. During the four-decade period, the postgraduate curricula and study methods underwent changes, adjusting both to innovations within the profession and also to the forms of postgraduate studies at other universities. Our professors participated as guest lecturers in postgraduate study programmes at universities abroad, and likewise professors from foreign universities lectured to our postgraduate students. The present modernization of postgraduate studies programme is also continuing in the direction of more efficatious studying, thus allowing for a direct transition to the preparations for doctoral work.

The postgraduate studies programme for obtaining the M.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering comprises the compulsory subject, four elective subjects, and one seminar work. In the seminars the students, under the guidance of a mentor, broaden and deepen their theoretical and practical knowledge. Each subject comprises 60 hours of lectures, and seminar work comprises 150 hours. The total of lectures and seminar hours amounts to 450 hours.

In the Master’s thesis, which normally takes 6 months to be prepared, the candidates display their capacity for thinking in a scientific manner and their ability to manage research work. Once the candidate has fulfilled all prescribed study requirements and has successfully defended the thesis, he/she is granted the title of M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering.

Postgraduate students enrolled in the study programme for acquiring the Master degree may, after completing their study requirements, and in agreement with their mentor once all the prescribed conditions have been fulfilled, continue their studies directly to doctorate level without having to produce the master thesis.

In the doctoral work, in addition to demonstrating their capacity for thinking in a scientific manner and their aptitude for research work, the candidates also give proof of original contributions to science, which are usually published in international scientific publications. After fulfilling the prescribed study requirements, i.e. having satisfied the condition of uniform doctoral studies and successfully defended his/her doctoral thesis; the candidate is awarded the title of Doctor of Science.
